UPSC Exam Pattern
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services
Examination is conducted in three stages:
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
Candidates must qualify at each stage to move to the next.
The first step to becoming an IAS officer is to clear the
UPSC CSE Exam. The exam is conducted in 2 successive stages -
A. Civil Services Preliminary Examination – The first stage
is an objective type. It comprises 2 papers – General Studies Paper 1 and
General Studies Paper 2. Each paper is of 200 marks. The second paper, i.e., GS
Paper 2, is important to qualify. It decides whether the student would be
allowed to sit in the Mains exam or not. The passing mark is 33%.
B. Civil Services Mains Examination – The second stage is the
written examination. It consists of a total of nine (9) papers. Among 9 papers,
only 7 papers are counted for the final Merit List. The remaining two paper needs
to qualify with minimum qualifying marks decided by UPSC each year. The 7
descriptive paper includes 2 Language papers, 1 Essay paper, 4 General Studies
papers and 2 Optional papers.
C. Personality Test: A Civil Service Personality Test is organised
by a board of members for evaluating a candidate’s personality. It is to assess
the candidate’s intelligence and decision-making skills.
After qualifying the Preliminary exam, Mains Exam and the Interview, a final Merit list is released, including the candidate’s rank.
UPSC Syllabus
The UPSC syllabus for the Civil Services Exam covers Prelims (Objective) and Mains (Written/Interview), with Prelims focusing on General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science, Current Events) & CSAT (Reasoning, Math, Comprehension) and Mains featuring Essay, 4 General Studies papers (Ethics, Tech, Governance, Culture/History/Geo), 2 Optional Subject papers, and 2 Qualifying Language papers. The preliminary examination is a screening test, while the main examination is a more comprehensive examination that tests the candidate's knowledge across several subjects.

This is the screening stage of the examination and consists of two objective-type question papers. The preliminary exam is usually held in the months of May and June every year.

UPSC Mains Syllabus (Written)
Paper 1
+ Essay: Candidates may be required to write essays on a variety of topics. They will be expected to focus on the essay topic, present their ideas in a structured manner, and write concisely. Marks will be awarded for effective and precise expression.
