New B.Tech Courses at IIT in 2026: What Students Need to Know Before JoSAA Choice-Filling

IIT

For decades, the dream of attending an IIT for lakhs of engineering aspirants has revolved around a specific set of established options: Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering. Every year, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal witnesses intense competition for these traditional branches.

However, a closer look at the data and seat matrices from the last three admission cycles reveals a significant shift across the country's tech campuses. Driven by national priorities like the 'India Semiconductor Mission,' the emergence of quantum computing, and the growing need for technology-driven healthcare, IITs have rapidly introduced several new undergraduate courses.

Candidates and parents often overlook many new courses because they rely primarily on booklets from coaching institutes and other online sources. Ranging from Engineering Physics (specialised for quantum computing) to Digital Agriculture, these courses are breaking down traditional departmental boundaries.

If you have qualified for JEE Advanced and are currently finalising your choices, here are some new programs you might not be aware of, categorised by their respective campuses.

1. IIT Madras Courses:

IIT Madras offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and online/BS degree programs across 18 academic departments. Key offerings include online BS degrees in Data Science and Electronic Systems, as well as B.Tech, dual degree (B.Tech & M.Tech, BS & MS), M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA, MA, MS, and PhD programs.

IIT Madras New Courses:

New CoursesCourse Details
B.Tech in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)Run by the Department of Applied Mechanics, this program focuses primarily on digital twins, high-performance computing (HPC) simulations, and AI integration. Students are trained to use advanced mathematical codes to predict how materials and structures will behave under extreme physical stress, even before a physical prototype is built.
B.Tech in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME)This newly introduced B.Tech branch in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering is focused on the medical device industry. Its curriculum highlights subjects like wearable health sensors, AI-based diagnostic imaging technology, and neural engineering, equipping students for deep-tech medical research.
BS programme in Data Science & Applications

IIT Madras has opened direct admission for its four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Data Science and Applications to candidates who have qualified for JEE Advanced 2026. Applications must be submitted via the official IIT Madras portal by May 31, 2026.

According to the website, this BS program is designed for flexibility and accessibility. Learners have the option to exit at various stages with a diploma or a BSc degree, or continue to complete the full BS degree. The curriculum emphasises programming, data science, and applied learning, preparing graduates for both further studies and industry roles.
BTech in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)

This program combines computational methods, such as machine learning, data science, and high-performance computing, with foundational training in solid and fluid mechanics, electrical engineering, materials science, and dynamics. The Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering states that the program is designed for careers in digital engineering, where physical systems, computational tools, and AI converge.

According to an IIT Madras press release, students can opt for a five-year dual degree through the institute's interdisciplinary dual degree programs in Computational Engineering or Complex Systems and Dynamics.

IIT Delhi Courses

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in fields such as engineering, science, design, management, and humanities. Admission is highly competitive and is primarily based on national-level entrance exams like JEE Advanced, GATE, CAT, JAM, and CEED.

IIT Delhi New Courses:

New CoursesCourse Details
BS in Chemistry (with AI-ML Application Focus)This four-year Bachelor of Science degree requires that 30% of its curriculum be based on computational data tools. Students do not merely study molecular structures in test tubes; they also employ machine learning models and algorithms to simulate chemical reactions and accelerate the process of discovering new pharmaceutical drugs.
B.Tech in Energy Engineering (Abu Dhabi Campus)Launched at IIT Delhi's global offshore outpost, this program focuses on the global transition away from fossil fuels. It covers, in detail, microgrid architecture, smart utility systems, solar thermal harvesting, and the structural design of green hydrogen grids.
B.Tech in Design

This program is set to commence in the 2025–26 academic year. According to the Design Department's program page, it is a four-year program with an intake of 20 students. Admission requires a JEE Advanced ranking and qualification in UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design).

The curriculum encompasses design thinking, research methods for analysing socio-technical systems, communication, and teamwork. This IIT Delhi program focuses on product design and is distinct from the institute's existing B.Des program, which the Design Department has been running since 1994.
