Courses Available in IITs: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India offer various programmes at the undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and doctoral (PhD) levels, primarily in the streams of science, engineering and technology. The 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) together provide more than 250 Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programs across different specialisations. The total number of seats available for these IITs at the B.Tech and M.Tech levels is 9,611 and 2,534, respectively.

In this article, we will discuss the various types of courses available at IITs, the most popular specialisations, specific courses, admission requirements, and the cut-off scores required for studying at any IIT in India. To get admission into IITs, candidates must first pass the JEE Main and subsequently take the JEE Advanced.

Most Desired Specialisations in IITs

According to the AISHE (An annual web-based All India Survey on Higher Education) report, engineering is among the top three streams with the highest enrolment. "Engineering and technology are the third major stream with 40.19 lakh students enrolled. The proportion of male students pursuing engineering and technology programmes is 71.4 per cent, while female students enrolment is 28.6 per cent.

The stream comprises 17 sub-disciplines, including computer engineering, information technology, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, among others.

According to the AISHE report, the top five sub-disciplines are mechanical engineering (ME), ME branch has 8.8 lakh students, computer engineering branch has 8.3 lakh students, electronics engineering branch has 6.5 lakh students, civil engineering branch (a broad field focused on the design, construction, and maintenance of the built environment, including public works like roads, bridges, and buildings) has 5.9 lakh students, and electrical engineering (focused on the study, design, development, and testing of electrical systems and devices) branch has 4.18 lakh students enrolled.
