IPMAT (Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test) is
an entrance exam held in India for admission to the 5-year Integrated Programme
in Management (IPM) conducted by some of the top management institutes in the
country. IPM is a bi-degree 5-year Integrated Programme (BBA + MBA) designed
for students immediately after class 12 who wish to pursue a career in
business, management, or entrepreneurship.
Who conducts IPMAT?
+ IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak conduct their IPMAT exams
separately (with slight differences in the exam structure).
IIM Indore conducts its own IPMAT, IIM Ranchi accepts IPMAT
Indore scores and SAT scores, IIM Rohtak conducts its own IPMAT, and IIM Bodh
Gaya and Jammu together conduct a test called JIPMAT.
+ Other institutes (like Nirma University, TAPMI, and some
private universities) also accept IPMAT scores.
Each test comprehensively tests the understanding and
aptitude of examinees in three sections. IPMAT Indore has 2 sections to test
quantitative aptitude - one section on multiple choice questions and another on
short answers, and one on verbal aptitude and reading comprehension.
The exam pattern of IIM Rohtak IPMAT is slightly different,
in which candidates are tested on a separate section for Data Interpretation and
Logical Reasoning, along with a section each for Reading Comprehension &
Verbal Ability and Quantitative Ability.
Why is IPMAT important?
Traditionally, management education in India involved first completing a bachelor's degree and then taking the CAT exam to pursue an MBA. IPMAT
bridges this gap: you join an IIM immediately after class 12 and complete both
UG + PG in management simultaneously. This makes it a fast and highly
competitive route to the top.

The IPMAT is an aptitude test, but its pattern is slightly different between IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak:
IIM Indore IPMAT Pattern 1. Quantitative Aptitude (MCQs) – High difficulty, math-intensive. 2. Quantitative Aptitude (Short Answer/Non-MCQs) – Requires solving questions without options. 3. Verbal Ability (MCQs) – Tests English grammar, comprehension, and logical reasoning. Duration: 2 hours. IIM Rohtak IPMAT Pattern; 1. Quantitative Aptitude; 2. Logical Reasoning; 3. Verbal Ability
Duration: 2 hours. |
IPMAT Selection Process
1. Written Exam (IPMAT)
2. Personal Interview (PI) - Tests communication, personality, and knowledge. (Some institutes also have a Written Ability Test (WAT), though not always.)
Final selection = IPMAT Score + Interview Performance + Academics (10th & 12th scores)
Why is IPMAT Popular? + Direct entry into IIM after Class 12. + Saves time (no gap between UG and PG). + World-class management training early on. + High placement packages. |
In short, IPMAT is your ticket to entering a top IIM at 18 and graduating at 23 with an MBA in hand.
