IIT Scholarship: Getting admission to an IIT is a major milestone. Paying for
it can be challenging, but every IIT offers significant financial assistance to
students who need it or have a strong academic record. The goal is simple: no
student should miss out on an IIT education due to financial constraints.
Why IIT Scholarships Are Important:
The cost of an IIT degree has risen over the past few years,
especially for undergraduate programs. Tuition, hostel fees, books, and daily
expenses add up rapidly. Scholarships fill this gap so students can focus on
their studies without financial pressure. Most awards fall into three broad
categories: merit-based, need-based, and special category scholarships.
Many IITs encourage talented students by offering various
types of scholarships. These institutes offer scholarships in the form of
partial or full fee waivers.
Major Scholarships Available:
Government Scholarships: Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GoI. Central Sector Scholarship for SC Students

Candidates will receive a personal PC of ₹45,000 (one-time);
living expenses of ₹2,200 per month; and books and stationery of ₹3,000 per

Ministry of Minority Affairs, GoI. Merit-cum-Means
Scholarship
Students from minority communities, such as Muslims,
Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis, whose parents' annual income does not
exceed ₹2.5 lakh (approximately ₹2.5 lakh), are eligible for this scholarship.
Under this scheme, hostel-based students will receive ₹10,000 per year, and
day-scholar students will receive ₹5,000 (approximately ₹5,000) for maintenance
expenses, and ₹20,000 (approximately ₹20,000) as course fee reimbursement,
whichever is lower. The scholarship amount will be provided by the state
government. Approximately 30% of the scholarship is reserved for girls. This is
the most widely used scholarship across IITs.
The Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship for IIT students is a
financial aid program that considers both academic merit and financial need.
While specific details vary from IIT to IIT, students generally require their
parental income to be below a certain threshold (often around ₹4.5-5 lakh per
year) and to maintain a minimum academic standing (such as a CGPA of 7.0 or
higher and no backlogs). These scholarships are awarded to a limited number of
students, typically up to 25% of the undergraduate intake.
Who can apply for Merit-cum-Means:
+ Students from economically weaker backgrounds.
+ Must maintain a minimum academic performance set by each
IIT.
What it covers:
+ A monthly stipend and a waiver or reduction of tuition fees.
+ The exact amounts vary by campus, but the goal is to make
studying affordable for families with limited income.
Important note:
The income limit for eligibility changes from time to time,
so students must check their IIT’s latest notice.
The Big Picture
Scholarships at IITs are more than just financial
assistance. They are an investment in the bright minds who will shape India's
future in technology, research, entrepreneurship, and public service. By
removing financial barriers, IITs allow students to focus on what truly
matters: learning, creating, building, and discovering.
For many Indian families, receiving a scholarship is more than just a financial relief. It's validation that their child is in one of the most competitive academic environments in the country.
