Best business schools in India: The NIRF 2025 rankings, released by the Ministry of Education (MoE) on September 4, 2025, have again placed the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad) as the top B schools in India, marking its sixth consecutive year at the number one position. The prestigious annual rankings evaluate institutions on key parameters, including teaching quality, research output, graduation outcomes, outreach, inclusivity, and institutional reputation, to determine India's best business schools.

Key Highlights from the NIRF Rankings 2025 Management Colleges:

i) IIM Ahmedabad continues to top the list for the sixth consecutive year, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode, further cementing the dominance of the top three IIMs.

ii) IIM Calcutta has slipped to seventh place, overtaken by IIM Lucknow (fifth) and IIM Mumbai (sixth), indicating a shift among the top IIMs.

iii) The IITs are strengthening their presence in management education. IIT Delhi continues to hold fourth place, while IIT Kharagpur (+7 to 12th) and IIT Madras (+3 to 13th) have moved up. However, IIT Roorkee has slipped (-10 to 22nd).

iv) The newer IIMs are also experiencing a boom: IIM Sambalpur (+16), IIM Trichy (+11), IIM Nagpur (+6), and IIM Jammu (+7) have all seen significant improvements.

v) Some IIMs have suffered heavy losses: IIM Shillong has dropped 14 places to 38th, while IIM Amritsar has fallen 17 places to 64th.

Top private B-schools have reported mixed results: XLRI Jamshedpur (-1 to 10th), TAPMI (+19 to 39th), IMI Kolkata (+14 to 42nd), and LIBA (+11 to 55th) have registered gains, while Amity Noida (-20 to 49th) and LPU (-6 to 44th) have declined.

vi) The biggest losers have been IIM Amritsar (-17) and IIM Shillong (-14), reflecting rising competition and pressure to perform.

vii) The top 51-100 segment has experienced upheaval, with new entrants such as Thyagaraja, IIT Jodhpur, and Lucknow University joining the rankings, focusing on outreach, inclusivity, and perception.
