Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is one of the premier engineering institutions in India. IIT Bombay was founded in 1958. Parliament declared IIT an Institute of National Importance in 1961. In 1946, the Government of India constituted a committee which proposed the creation of four prestigious Institutes of Technology to guide the progress of technical education in the country.
